Bonesy back in ‘98 Sombrio

Dug up this little pic from the book “Cedar Surf” published back in 2003, which provides great history into the early days of surfing out here on the west coast of Canada. Looking through the pages, makes me realize again just how much has changed over the last decade. When I started surfing, Jesse Oke was still “King”, Most of the surfers were really old, and Shacks were still lined along Sombrio beach.

Me on the left, my good buddy Dan on the right. First board was a 6′8 North West with a wonky fin.

The FCS Croissant Sandwich Fin

I had surfing on my mind all day at the office. I was looking down at my lunch, and there it was… The FCS Croissant Sandwich Fin!

kinda like Jesus' face on a piece of toast.

The perfect balance of rake, drive, and flavor. Its grilled center for stiff flex.

Kooks

Probably one of the best satirical pieces I have ever seen on localism in surfing and the topic of “kooks“. It is the infamous Kooks short film, featured at the New Your Surf Film Festival last year.

For those of you who don’t know what a “kook” is, its is basically a term created by aggro surfers to describe surfers that pretend that they can surf, when they actually suck. Kooks typically don’t follow the rules of the lineup, and get in the way of other surfers.

The irony is that most “local” surfers are old guys who are really mediocre surfers and even treat rippers as if they are Kooks.

Basically the film takes the concept of how “locals” at surf breaks treat “kook” surfers or any visiting surfers for that matter, and bringing it from the waves to common places like the grocery store, coffee shop, laundromat, etc.

Bonesy to hold Surf Comp in 2010

Bonesy needs your help!

We are planning a surf competition for 2010, open to all eveyone. What we need your help with is choosing the venue. We would love to see it take place in the south island, but it means having to do a holding period where the dates of the comp can change. If we have it in Tofino, it means people will have to travel a bit more.

So help us by voting on the left of the page. We are thinking China beach in Nov, so there is a good chance of swell, and its a nice beach break so lots of peaks to surf for competitors.
